We talk about this activity in my work with aspiring allies; if we’re lucky, we might have even tried it. Here are some resources that you might find helpful if you want to explore it further. It comes with caveats before you implement it with your own groups.
Please make sure you enable psychologically safer spaces before you start this exercise.
Facilitators must be aware that this activity, whilst powerful, can leave participants feeling vulnerable. Consider different ways to adapt this exercise to suit your group, setting, and level of comfortability as a facilitator. More importantly, please read Christina Torres’ post, Meg Bolger’s blog post and Jey Ehrenhalt’s article for Learning for Justice about how this activity can be improved upon and why it can be problematic. Once you’ve considered these, you can find a meaningful way to tailor this activity and the session it is a part of to be safer, insightful, and reflective of your group.
